Sal Maida, bassist, friend, father, husband, rocknroll royalty, and everything else great, passed away on February 1, 2025.
I met Sal when he was playing with Cracker thru my buddy and mentor Frank Funaro who was drumming in the band at the time. So when I’d venture out to see Cracker, I’d always hang out with Frank and Sal. I feel like I got to know him a little bit. Everyone I took with me to see Cracker, loved Sal.
Then in 2016 I knew I wanted to make a record in NYC with Frank Funaro producing. When he suggested that Sal would be interested in playing on the record I about passed out! It was a dream come true.
So we made the record and ended up playing the Underwater Sunshine Festival in NYC that year, with Frank and Sal as my band. It was surreal, but at the same time, I started to feel like one of the gang. My confidence grew from that point on, and things have been pretty okay.
Top cap it off, the morning after our show, Sal met me at South Street Seaport and we sat down over a beer and lobster rolls, to discuss his career up to that point.
After that, I’d call him occasionally to check in. He came to see me play a few times as well when I was in town. NYC will feel different next time I’m there.
I love Sal Maida. You will too.
