I wrote this song after a 3am hotel stop in Shamrock, TX a long time ago. A friend and I were on our way to Santa Fe, NM and we just couldn’t make it any farther down the road.
We pulled up to the empty parking lot of a chain hotel to find a young woman having a smoke outside. She followed us in and check us into our room. My only memory of that was her asking where we were from. One of us said, “Indiana”. She replied, “Oh yeah, Indiana? What state is that in?”
The song has nothing to do with that other than it created a mystery to me about what the hell was going in in Shamrock.
A year or so later my wife and I went to Santa Fe together. I was in the midst of recording my record “Lovers and Other Amateurs”. I recorded most of that record in hotels, parking lots, and BnBs. This was recorded on the porch of a BnB in Santa Fe. You can hear the traffic on I-25 in the distance.

Shamrock, TX
i wanted to write to tell you that
our trip was held up at the texas border
we were crossing over
quietly and hoping to make to amarillo by morning
when suddenly everything stopped
i was thinking right then
that i needed to tell you so i hope you know i
was thinking ‘bout you
i was thinking baby
i was thinking maybe
honey
it/we could have been worse.
nothing ever happened we just stopped
but a smell hung heavy for a few hours
and i’m hungry and i’m lonely
and i’m looking for you all around me
the good news is we’ll be moving on
and i bet we make amarillo by dark
a curious turn of events i know
but you needed to know
that once i started thinking about you
i couldn't stop
it helps me thinking about that
you're out on the porch drinking a beer or a glass
of wine
by the time you read this i'll be doing the same thing
albeit
alone
just know nothing ever happened and we stopped
just short of shamrock
and i know that sounds like a joke
but it was really nothing
i’m hungry and i’m lonely
and i’m looking for you all around me
